Whitworth Art Gallery Brise Soleil Solar Shading
Project scope : detailed design + manufacture + installation
In 2015 Whitworth Art Gallery in Manchester reopened its doors after completion of a major refurbishment to the Grade II listed building which included a striking stainless steel brise soleil installed along a 32m length of the glazed promenade façade on the building’s rear elevation. The brise soleil was designed to reduce glare and provide solar shade and the detail design was developed to undertake manufacture of the brise soleil in 20 No. modules which were then seamlessly connected at site using secret bespoke locking pins with hidden fixings.
The brise soleil modules were manufactured in high grade stainless steel and finished in a unique shot peened finish. The detailed engineering adopted a design that minimised welding and instead adopted threaded connections, in order to avoid distortion and maintain straightness and shape.
