Whitworth Art Gallery Stainless Steel Glazing Mullions
Project scope : detailed design + manufacture + installation
In 2015 Whitworth Art Gallery in Manchester reopened its doors after completion of a major refurbishment to the Grade II listed building which included spectacular slender stainless steel glazing mullions along a promenade façade and café area. The slender mullions form the primary load bearing vertical elements and are manufactured from high grade stainless steel and finished in a highly reflective mirror finish to create a reflective space that embraces the surroundings.
The detail design of the mullions adopted the use of secret structural joint pins installed to very fine tolerances, allowing the mullions to retain shape whilst transmitting vertical load. A trial mullion was manufactured and tested under prescribed load conditions to verify the design integrity.
