Trinidad North Coast artist studio

Private Residence : Steel Framed Artist Studio Building

Project scope : detailed design + manufacture + installation

This unique and challenging project was completed in 2020, creating an exposed steel framed building constructed on steep tropical cloud forest terrain along the north coast of Trinidad. The project was full of unique features including :

  • 3 No. 4m tall x 3m wide aluminium pivot doors operating on braked thrust bearing pivot point system.
  • Steel framed walls infilled with both glazed panels and tropical hardwood cladding panels.
  • Ultra-deep profile bespoke stainless steel roof cladding panels using a unique concealed fixing system. The ultra-deep profile of the stainless steel roof panels permitted an oversail design whereby the roof sheets possessed sufficient structural strength to oversail the steel framing elements by over 1m creating a striking and unusual architectural detail.
  • Bespoke aerofoil shaped vertical stainless steel louvre blades, on mechanical lever arm adjustment mechanism. The louvre blades were designed for extreme wind loading.
  • Illuminated walkway leading to bespoke secure gated entrances.
  • Sliding Doors on bespoke rail system.
  • Unique floor support system on underfix insulated fixing system.
  • Lightning Conductor System.
  • Bespoke timber louvre sash panels operating on mechanical sash weight mechanism.

All components were manufactured in the UK and shipped to Trinidad and then transported by road from Port of Spain to the north coast mountain location. All components were manufactured in modular form to facilitate transportation and then reassembled and installed at site.
