Project scope : detailed design + manufacture + installation
V&A Museum commissioned the design, manufacture and installation of 3 No. bespoke 7m high pivoting aluminium framed doors mounted on braked thrust bearing pivots. In plan view each pivot door was fin shaped with a wingspan of 3m and clad with reflective black carbon fibre composite panels with bullnose corners.
This lightweight cladding material, more commonly found in aircraft manufacture, was intricately detailed to present a seamless contemporary finish on the external face of the pivot doors. Each pivot door was equipped with electromagnetic locks to function and hold each door in both closed and open positions. When all 3 No. pivot doors are placed in the closed position they present a seamless finned wall.
