Medieval and Renaissance Galleries Stone Capital Support Columns
Project scope : detailed design + manufacture + installation
V&A Museum commissioned the design, manufacture and installation of 12no. 150mm diameter and 1no. 450mm diameter x 1.8m tall high strength steel powder coated columns. The slender columns were created using flat vertical high strength bright steel plates configured in cross formation and held in tight square tolerance with sharp corners utilising hidden metal dowels with interference fits.
This generated tight fitting sharp ‘dry’ corners without the need for welding resulting in an aesthetically pleasing appearance. The top capping plate was equipped with a captive design detail to receive the stone capital artefacts.
