V&A Museum daylit staircase glass balustrade
Medieval and Renaissance Galleries Feature Glass & Stainless Steel Balustrade
Project scope : detailed design + manufacture + installation
This is a feature glass and stainless steel balustrade to the hub stair in the V&A Museum day lit gallery area. The design concept was produced by MUMA Architects and comprised fabricated stainless steel back and front stringer plates together with associated profiled laminated glass panels. The stainless steel back and front stringer plates were match machined during fabrication to ensure a toleranced fit.
Both the stainless steel components and the glass components had to be design engineered to mimic and follow the geometric profile of the as-cast concrete stairs. This required a detailed 3D digital survey to be undertaken to capture spatial position and geometric profile shape of the as-cast concrete stairs and the resulting complex and painstaking design process produced a stunning, elegant, slender design with no obvious form of fixing to the structure.
