Westminster Abbey School glass floor

Glass Floor with Stainless Steel Frame

Project scope : detailed design + manufacture + installation

During recent refurbishment works of the Grade I listed Westminster School, archaeological excavations discovered part of the original kitchen to the Monks Abbey, dating back to the 11th century.  This archaeology was discovered underneath what is now a reception room floor, and the decision was made to create a permanent display glass floor directly above the archaeology as part of the refurbishment works.

The detailing and design of this new glass floor structure had to be carefully coordinated given the archaeology in some areas was only 10mm below the underside of the 33mm thick laminated glass floor panels, which were supported in a precision dull polished stainless steel framework. As part of the works underfloor lighting and temperature control were installed to help preserve the archaeology.
