Ceramics Gallery High Level Aluminium Display Ring
Project scope : detailed design + manufacture + installation
Victoria and Albert Museum commissioned the design, supply and installation of a 12m diameter high level aluminium fabricated channel display ring, forming an integral part of an art installation (signs and wonders) by the acclaimed ceramics expert Edmund De Waal.
To ensure the display ring conformed to the circularity of the intended existing exhibition dome cornice space a detailed 3D digital survey was undertaken and despite its Victorian age the existing dome cornice was found to be almost perfectly circular. The channel display ring was fabricated in 16 equal radial sections and fully trial assembled in the workshop recreating support location positions and the surveyed circularity.
Further surveys at site required four equi-spaced positions to be marked around the dome cornice circumference and openings were carefully made in the original plaster to expose the brick walls behind each position. The distance of each brick wall was then surveyed relative to the theoretical centre of the intended position of the channel display ring. The corresponding display ring support brackets were then manufactured according to this survey data.
All manufactured components of the channel display ring were powder coated in a vibrant red to create contrast with the brilliant white colour of the existing dome cornice.
After careful installation and assembly of the high level display ring at site, the four openings made in the original plaster were restored and redecorated around the display ring supports. Edmund De Waal and his team loaded the display ring with over 400 ceramic objects to complete the installation.
