London’s Garden Bridge

Landing Building Finned Glazed Façade

Project scope : detailed engineering design + manufacture

London’s Garden Bridge project commissioned a full scale 1:1 mock-up of a finned glazed façade design, planned for the landing buildings on both the Westminster north and Lambeth south embankments. The mock-up was a 2.5m tall section of the top corner of the planned 12m tall landing building(s) façade and was built to evaluate material selections, material finishes and fin geometry.

The vertical fins were to be tapering triangular geometry, tapered towards the top to reveal a series of secondary glazed cladding panels set behind on patina brass transom bars. Incorporated into the mock-up were a number of swaged eyelets moulded into the fin geometry to house CCTV cameras. Along the roof of the mock-up was a hidden gutter detail, finished in dull polished stainless steel with the downpipes further hidden behind the vertical fins. The detailing and design of this complex façade design was a challenge successfully undertaken and the mock-up was built in 2015. Alas the Garden Bridge project was cancelled and the mock-up was destined to be scrapped, but it was saved and has been repurposed as an impressive garden sculpture which is illuminated at night and always generates conversation due to its interesting back story !
